30th April – Southampton Old Bowling Green.
We had the pleasure of hosting Southampton OBG for the first time for our opening friendly of the year. After the match played in glorious sunshine (and a strong breeze) and traditional match meal, they serenaded us with their club song (which I believe is a ‘first’ for us). Thanks to Southampton for making it a thoroughly enjoyable day.
4th May – Worthing Pavilion.
8th May – Tooting
11th May – Burgess Hill
14th May – St. Ann’s Well
21st May – Hangleton Cancelled
25th May – Dorset Tourists (H)
Its always a pleasure to welcome a new team and the Dorset Tourists appeared to enjoy their afternoon (helped, no doubt, by some rather one-sided rink scores). Not only that, but we managed to find the sunniest day of their tour for them.
29th May – Streatham (A)
Our first ‘road trip’ of the season; thanks to Streatham for putting up with hosting us. I’m sure they’ll be pleased to know everyone arrived back safely!
5th June – Cliffe (A)
Reports were received that the match was played in the usual conditions, i.e. pouring rain. Apparently, everything was going well until the tea-break. Never mind, we have a chance of revenge next month.
8th June – Southwick (H) Cancelled
11th June – Long Stratton (H)
More new opposition, this time from Norfolk. The weather stayed fair till pretty much the end of the match, whereupon the visitors toasted their success with a pint or two of Harvey’s.
12th June – Pirrie Park (A)
A familiar story from Southampton; the match was rained off. The hosts entertained us with skittles and bingo prior to an enjoyable evening meal. Needless to say, with the benefit of home advantage, Pirrie Park were victorious.
16th June – Royal Household (A)
The ladies enjoyed a match in the grounds of Windsor Castle. It is hoped further fixtures will follow.
18th June – Harrodians (H)
22nd June – Burgess Hill (H)
2nd July – Waverley (H)
Waverley President Rob Moran brought his team along to Hove & Kingsway as part of his President’s tour. As well as the bowls match on Saturday, he and his party enjoyed a weekend partaking of the hospitality of the local hostelries before visiting us again on Sunday morning for a roll-up, and a quick farewell drink. Thanks to Rob and all at Waverley for their visit, and we look forward to welcoming them back again for Charity Sunday and the Hove Open Tournament.
10th July – Cliffe (H)
16th July – North Sheen (H)
27th July – Worthing (A) Cancelled
30th July – Hangleton (A)
31st July – Farnborough Gate (H)
6th August – Strawberry Hill (H)
10th August – Dyke Road (H)
14th August – Ryde Marina (H)
20th August – Harlington (H)
26th August – Sanderstead (H) Cancelled
3rd September – St Anns Well (H)
4th September – Harrodians (A)
Unfortunately, the match fell victim to the weather, the team arriving home early evening, not having bowled a wood between them.
13th September – Southwick (A)
14th September – Bocking Alliance (H)
Surprisingly, given the weather of late, this match, 9 triples, was played in sunny (if windy) conditions. Sadly the host team could not make home advantage pay on many of the rinks, or maybe it was just generosity, as Bocking held 7 rinks out of the 9.
As well as playing a friendly, we also had the pleasure of hosting many of the Bocking party during the evening for the entire week, as they were staying locally and dropped in for a couple after dinner. A friendlier bunch of people you could not meet anywhere. Thanks for your company and we hope to see you again.
20th September – Hove Park (H)
The match that never was.
So that’s it for another season. Hopefully, everyone enjoyed themselves despite the worst the weather could throw at us (be honest, you’ve played in worse!) and are already psyching themselves up for next season!!
